Here is your weekly dose of “FridayTop-5 ,” a list of what I’m enjoying, stories I found of interest or gadgets that are entertaining and fun.
The biggest news this week is probably Apple’s launched a slew of new services most of which are tied to some sort of subscriptions service. Followed by some interesting new across cannabis, horology, and of course, my favorite sneaker news.
Tech:: Apple Steps into Credit Cards
Apple is making a credit card. It’ll exist as a virtual card and as a physical titanium card. There will be no late fees or annual fees. The physical card has no number printed on it nor will it have a CVV, expiration date, or signature; we will assume it will be a vertical card too; why can’t everyone else start doing that…. An interesting fact is that unlike other cards if a merchant needs info, then you will open the Wallet app and it will generate a one-time use, dynamic security codes.
Apple like many others are entering the payment and payment processing space. It will be interesting to see if they move into Fin-Tech and provide customers micro-loans at their store to compete with the services they are already offering at many of their current retail locations.
Cannabis:: Seth Rogen Opens a Cannabis Supplier
With films like Pineapple Express, Sausage Party, Superbad, and The Interview to their credits, Seth Rogan and Evan Goldberg have partnered up again for their next venture: a cannabis company. Originating from Vancouver, the duo have just launched a weed supplier called Houseplant back home in Canada. We are highlighting the fact that Seth Rogan like many others are entering the Cannabis industry either as a dispensary owner or as a vertically integrated business owning grow, cultivate, and dispensing facilities. With legislation changes, we will continue to see significant cash infusion in this industry, and like the Micro-Brewery craze in the 2000s, we anticipate that after the first wave of capital, you will see the establishment of national brands followed by big Tobacco and spirit titans enter this space which will drive consolidation. We will continue to highlight this industry as the non-recreational CBD, and post-work-out applications are of great intrigue.
Horology:: Talking Watches 2 With John Mayer
I am a massive Hodinkee reader and a lover of watches and oddly enough it was the original Talking Watches-1 with John Mayer that both informed me of Hodinkee and turned my opinion from this John Mayer guys is a real dope (see the Rollingstone interview) to hey this guy is really insightful, funny, charming, and knows a whole lot about watches. Enjoy watching this episode, you will learn a ton about watches, namely Rolex. Learn more here by heading to hodinkee.com
Sneakers:: Jordan Brand & Skateboarding
Adult Beverages:: Lemon Zester Grater with Channel Knife
1Easylife lemon peeler has a sharp holes in its stainless steel head that remove the zest from the pith of lemons and other citrus fruits easily, You might hear the claim that the pith adds unwanted bitterness that takes away from the effect of the citrus. For a guy who has recently come to enjoy Titos on ice with a lemon, this peeler was only a couple of dollars and elevates my cocktails to epic proportions. Amazon Link.
