Three years ago, I discovered Maya Janes Coles thanks to Richie Hawtin’s weekly ENTER Experience event from the legendary Space Ibiza. At this time, I was pretty much checked out on the whole EDM sounds and Richie’s Enter events were being live streamed each Thursday. For me, the timing of these events was pretty much perfect. They typically started around 3-4 PM Eastern which was right around the same time my afternoon drag kicked-in and impacted my ability to get much of anything done. So in addition to a constant quest for an afternoon caffeine fix, I was given the gift of cutting edge house music streaming live and direct into my ear drums.
During one of the weeks, I happen to not only be listening but also thanks to a second monitor I was also passively watching the live stream. From glancing at a power point to looking out the window wishing it was 6 PM, I also happen to notice this woman completely owning the opening set in the SAKE bar of ENTER and within a few minutes I was hooked. Maya range that day went from deep house to some serious techno house bangers; even though she was the opener, she found a way to keep my attention and work a few hours longers than normal.
A few months later, MJC went on to host the legendary Essential Mix; her mix features a slew of her original productions and remixes and ever since then; I’ve been hooked to that nocturnal sound.
The following mix was recorded live from Johannesburg and despite getting her mixer drink-drowned three minutes in, Maya closed out her inaugural True Music performance like an absolute champ.
