Aaliyah was one of those rare artists that sparked a transformation of a genre. Sure, before R&B had had stars, there was Whitney, En Vogue, and Diana Ross. But Aaliyah was something different. Se was a sort of authentic POP/R&B star; almost you could argue the Britney Spears of her generation in a cross-over type of manner. Musically she had Timberland and Missy pushing crazy tracks her way. From a cinema standpoint, she did movies with Jet Lee and some crazy action movies where she was the queen of all vampires. Tommy Hilfiger had made her the face of his brand's cross-over to urban culture from a sponsorship standpoint. And oh yeah, she was dating then CEO of Roc a Fella Records Dame Dash. So to say she had momentum was the understatement of the year.
But you didn't come here to life history; you came here for the music. On this week's Music Monday, we are featuring her second album 'One In a Million" which was always a favorite of mine, then we are featuring her third and final album self titled 'Aaliyah' which saw the album’s singles were nominated for Grammys, including Best R&B Album and Best Female R&B Vocal Performance for “Rock the Boat” and “More Than a Woman.”
If you love these tracks, you love this sound, go head to Timberland and Mago's album or Missy Elliott's albumn, I promise you will enjoy it.
