Story-5:: YORK Athletics Mfg.
Overview: Since 1946, three generations of our family have been outfitting athletes around the world to perform at their best. The way we have done that has evolved and adapted to the times but one thing remains constant: we are proud, independent New Englanders who fight every day for our customers.
GEN 1 — 1946
Under the direction of Henry Spaulding and his wife Viola (“Via”), Indian Head Shoe Manufacturing Company began manufacturing performance footwear for athletes like NFL Hall of Famer, Johnny Unitas, and Olympic Gold Medalist, Peggy Fleming. Manufacturing took place in the R.G. Sullivan 7-20-4 Cigar Factory Building in Manchester, NH, which remains in the YORK family to this day.
GEN 2 - 1980
In the 1980s, Don and Gail (Henry Spaulding’s daughter) York parlayed the factory outlet store in Manchester, NH into a sporting goods retailer serving as a "complete school, team, and family sport outfitter.” Indian Head Athletics and the York family outfitted the sporting community with equipment, team uniforms and custom embroidery for almost 40 years before retiring in 2018.
GEN 3 — 2016
In 2016, Travis and Kyle York (Don and Gail’s sons) teamed up with footwear industry heavyweight Mark McGarry (Nike, Puma) to launch YORK Athletics MFG, an independently owned footwear brand that produces and markets performance footwear for the everyday fighter. Footwear styles are all named after Gen 1 & 2 family members Henry, Via, Gail, and Frank, paying homage to a 3 generation legacy in sportswear.
