Friday Top Five:: 07.15.22
Each week in our ‘Friday Top Five’ segment, we feature five things we thought were interesting, notable, or culturally significant. This week we are showcasing stories on Custom Blazers from the good people at Common Wealth Proper. Chef Frank Proto shows us the best way to make restaurant-quality fries at home. When you are searching for tracks, look no further than Mr. Pete Tony MNB himself. Once you find that perfect track, sit back and sip a cocktail with Yvonne Langen. And closing out this week’s Top-Five, I have a headphone review that will have you heading to the store to get a new pair of cans to jam out to all those new tracks you found on Pete Tong’s Website.

Story-1:: "Swoosh & Tie" CUSTOM MID BLAZER '77 PROGRAM
Overview: In 1973, Oregon-based Nike created its first basketball shoe and named it the “Blazer,” paying homage to the Portland Trailblazers. It was only its third shoe ever, and it wanted to ensure that the new “Swoosh” logo had plenty of eyeballs. So it inked a deal with NBA star George “The Iceman” Gervin of the San Antonio Spurs. With a simple but elegant design and prominent swoosh logo, the shoe was soon on every television set as The Iceman tore through the league as one of its star shooting guards.
Made with a leather upper, a mesh nylon tongue, and a textured vulcanized rubber sole, it was at the time the most technologically advanced b-ball shoe on the market. The shoe also gave rise to the first-ever “player exclusive” as it had “ICEMAN” written across the heel where the “NIKE” was usually positioned.
With new technology that soon followed, the Blazer fell out of favor with basketball players. However, the shoe’s heavy leather, suede, and gripping bottom made it the perfect shoe for skaters that needed durability and traction. So in the 1990s, it crossed over to the skateboarding community.
The shoe continued to evolve as street artist Futura 2000 collaborated with Nike in 2003 for 1000 pairs of olive, tan, and navy suede editions. This raised the shoe’s profile and introduced it to new markets. In 2005 pro skateboarder Lance Mountain developed the Blazer SB that had additional padding for the tongue and Air Zoom insoles. Over the years, the Blazer continued to be the subject of high-profile collaborations, including Supreme, Sacai, and Off-White.
It’s time that CMMP took a turn - with your help, of course.

Story-3:: All Gone Pete Tong X Kevin McKay
Overview: For the better part of 30 years (might actually be 20), Pete Tong has been and the forefront of breaking artists and DJs through his radio show the Essential Mix, and his Radio One Show and Live gigs. I always look to Pete Tong to help me know what is next. I recently was looking for this remix of Prince’s ‘Controversy’ and finally found it on Pete Tong’s Website, so go check out Controversy (Kevin McKay Re-edit) (Youtube | SoundCloud)
Story-4:: Taste and Tipple
Overview: Yvonne Langen from Cambridge, ON, I moved to Ottawa 12 years ago to study journalism at Carleton University. With the exception of a stint in Kigali, Rwanda, and grad school in Toronto, I’ve been here ever since. On Taste & Tipple, she shares some of her favorite spots to eat, drink and revel throughout the city and beyond.
When she is not discovering Ottawa’s newest hot spot or an old favorite, I’m in my kitchen at home whipping up new recipes from my favorite blogs, cookbooks, and, my personal favorite, the Food & Drink magazine. I first fell in love with food at age 12 and you can learn more about my origin story as a foodie in her blog. You can also check out her e-book, which features 12 original tipples that take root in the flavors of your garden. Each recipe has a starring ingredient that can be found in your backyard – be it a flower, herb, or vegetable.

Story-5:: DJ Life Mag X Pioneer HDJ-CX Headphones
Overview: I may or may not know, but I have had the privilege to review DJ products for DJ Times and now DJ Life Mag for the better of 10 years. In this review (Article Linked Here), I analyze the new design language and practical applications for these mixing-and-monitoring headphones – and, hopefully, we’ll help determine if they should be in contention for your first pair of DJ headphones or your next pair if you are in the market for a replacement and or an upgrade.
