Friday Top Five:: 03.11.22

Each week our ‘Friday Top Fivesegment, we feature five things we thought were interesting, notable, or culturally significant. This week, we feature Felix Cartel and his remix with Elohim titled “Nothing Good Comes Easy”. Next, we get you #SpringReady with Sid Mashburn’s raw selvage denim, moving on from there we head back to music for Swiss Beat’s Jazz Curation limited edition vinyl, moving onto what I will think just might be the top watch of 2022 from Breitling. Closing out things with Amazon’s answer to the modern radio, and a Rif on the Negroni.

Story-2:: Lets There Be Denim

Overview: Our Slim Straight Jeans have been around for a few years, but the rinsed, non-selvage version has always been the bestseller. And that's not surprising... raw selvage denim requires some commitment. A lot of guys find it too stiff, too dark, or too expensive. And yes, a pair of selvage jeans starts out rigid—but that doesn't last long. After a few years, they'll soften and fade and become as unique to you as a fingerprint. To prove it, we checked in on some well-loved pairs around our office to see how they've broken in. While Jonathan's mastered the annual hand wash, and Titus clearly keeps a pen in his left pocket, your own pair will tell a totally different story based on the way you sit, the stuff you carry, and how frequently you do (or don't do) laundry. Selvage is kinda magical in that way. Here's what it looks like on the other side.

We had “the best dadgum pair of jeans ever made” in mind when we designed these. It's a slim, straight 5-pocket shape that riffs on two other longtime favorites: think Levi's 501s with more taper, APC New Standards with more room in the rise, and slimmer than both from the knee down. This pair is made in Los Angeles of 13.5oz American ring-ring selvage denim — we were able to get a little yardage from Cone Mills's White Oak plant, the last remaining denim mill in the USA before they shut down for good. (We had enough for one last batch, so grab a pair while you can because once it's gone, it's gone.) They've got blue oxford pocketing, a button fly, brass rivets, chain-stitched hems, and clean, unbranded back pockets. If you're new to selvage, don't be put off by the initial stiffness — raw denim softens up and fades over time. And especially if you can hold off on washing them for a while, they'll wear in and become as unique to you as your fingerprints. (We also make a rinsed, non-selvage version if you prefer a less-crunchy, more broken-in starting point.)

Story-3:: Long Live Jazz

Overview: Music Curated by Kasseem “Swizz Beatz” Dean, taking you on a journey from iconic jazz standards to contemporary jazz from present-day greats, paired with the seminal photography of Kwame Brathwaite, part of The Dean Collection.

  • Music Curated by:

  • Kasseem "Swizz Beatz" Dean

  • Front Cover Artwork:

  • Kwame Brathwaite “Untitled (Grandassas in Car), 1968 c., printed 2021. Sikolo Brathwaite, Juanita and Tiffany McClean during a Garvey Day Celebration.” Courtesy of The Kwame Brathwaite Archive.

Only 1000 hand-numbered editions made: a premium package, double-disc gatefold vinyl featuring Kasseem “Swizz Beatz” Dean’s choice of Kwame Brathwaite’s “Untitled (Grandassas in Car), 1968 c., printed 2021.”, a recent edition to The Dean Collection, as the artwork for the front cover.

Dean’s intent is to create an experience with his curation of music and art on this record – where someone can play the record, sit down with the sleeve and have a transcending moment in time that can be shared with loved ones.

Story-4:: Watch of the Year Contender

Overview: Paying homage to three generations of inventors – Léon, Gaston & Willy Breitling – the Premier Datora is the most refined Breitling chronograph with its complete calendar and moon-phase. As Willy Breitling said, the Premier is an “unmistakable stamp of impeccable taste”. This latest generation of Premier chronographs brings its timeless elegance back to life, and showcases Breitling’s highest level of watchmaking thanks to a range of iconic Premier complications: the Chronograph, the Duograph and the Datora. Featuring rectangular chronograph pushers and Arabic numerals, the heritage-revived Premier Datora displays a variety of elegant design details such as grooves on the case-sides, open sapphire casebacks and vintage-inspired hands. The Datora comes in two variations: in stainless steel with a copper dial and a brown alligator strap or in 18k red gold with a silver dial and a brown alligator strap. “Datora” was a term used by Breitling in the 1940s and refers to a complete calendar chronograph displaying day, date, month and the different moon phases. The Datora is powered by the cosc-certified Manufacture Caliber B25.

Story-5:: TV on the Radio (Sort of..)

Overview: Amazon’s Clubhouse competitor has arrived. The retail giant on Tuesday launched a new mobile app called Amp, which allows people to create live “radio shows” where they can act as a DJ, by taking callers and playing tracks from Amazon Music’s tens of millions of licensed songs, ranging from classic titles to today’s music. The app is not yet available to the wider public, as it requires an access code to use.

The Amp website is also currently password-protected and the app itself requires an access code to get in — indications that the app isn’t quite ready for prime time, but is rather launching for limited testing ahead of a wider public debut

Story-5+:: This 4-Ingredient Blood Orange Negroni Recipe Is the Perfect Way to Celebrate Citrus Season

Overview: While a Negroni is traditionally made with equal parts gin, Campari, and vermouth—see classic recipe for exact measurements—this recipe adds two blood orange slices for a fruity twist. The recipe also recommends swapping the gin with Prosecco or tonic water for bubbles, if you want—this swap will also bring down the strength of the drink, if that's what you prefer.
