Story-1:: Amazon’s Halo Rise

Overview: A bedside sleep tracker, wake-up light, and smart alarm. With privacy concerns in mind, the device is able to perform its duties without needing a camera or microphone, using contactless sensors to sense movement from only the primary user close to it and only when that person is trying to fall asleep.

Using machine learning, the Halo Rise recognizes sleep stages and looks to wake you up in the morning at the lightest stage of sleep using a gradual brightening glow for optimum restfulness. The device can also keep track of environmental data in the room including the temperature, humidity, and brightness which can be referenced when analyzing sleep quality under different conditions. Additionally, Halo Rise can be integrated with Alexa, featuring functions such as designated personal wake-up songs and setting routines such as automatically dimming the light at certain times for meditation.

The Halo Rise will be available later this year for $139.99 USD, which includes a six-month Halo membership.

Story-2:: Netflix will air a new mini-series focusing on the formation of Spotify.

Overview: Led by Daniel Ek, a group of passionate young entrepreneurs come together in what seems to be the impossible task to change the music industry - and the world. They set out to create a legal streaming service for music.  In this fictionalized account, a Swedish tech entrepreneur and his partners set out to revolutionize the music industry with a legal streaming platform. The Playlist comes to Netflix Oct 13, 2022. If you haven’t heard of Spotify, well, get up from under your rock ;).

Story-3:: HMV Re-Launches Wax Printing

Overview: HMV, has announced that it will be returning to wax printing after the inception of its brand new record label, 1921 Records. The label made its first signing earlier this week with Newcastle singer-songwriter India Arkin, making her the first HMV signing in more than 20 years. India Arkin’s first release on 1921 Records, ‘Home Truths’, will be available exclusively in HMV’s 115 retail stores around the UK, and elsewhere on its online shop; it will launch to align with National Album day on October 15th.

“With our new label, we want to do what we can to help debut artists make their mark in a tough industry. Streaming algorithms mean it’s hard for new artists to get their voices heard, so we’re giving them the chance to get their albums in our stores where music fans can discover them for themselves.”

“For the most part it will be unknowns, although we will never be turning down Ed [Sheeran],” says Doug Putman, HMV’s new owner who helped to rescue the retailer from administration in 2019.”

Story-4:: HMV - New Artist India Arkin

Overview: India Arkin is an indie singer-song-writer based in Newcastle. Having always had artistic drive at the forefront, India originally moved to the city to study Fine Art, and began recording music for her solo project through the lockdowns in 2020. Launching her debut single “Dashboard Dancing” in August of 2021; she quickly caught her attention of the BBC, finding a heavy rotation on BBC Introducing North East and BBC Introducing Tees.  Her debut EP “No Innocent Bystander” later featuring on Tom Robinsons Radio 6 Mixtape, and earning her a residency at The Sage Gateshead.

India continues to tow the line between her music and fine art creative practice further as she develops herself a musician: defined by her idiosyncratic soundscapes and confessional lyricism.
